In the early hours of New Year's Day 2026, a violent assault by an off-shoulder woman on another young woman at Kwun Tong Promenade went viral online, sparking widespread condemnation of the attacker and cheering bystanders who failed to intervene.
Multiple videos circulating on social media capture the incident at the popular waterfront spot, where over a hundred onlookers formed a circle around the two women.
The aggressor, described as wearing an off-shoulder top, repeatedly kicked and slapped the victim—at least four times with sounds likened to loud firecrackers—and pulled her hair, dragging her back when she attempted to flee.
The victim, carrying a black shoulder bag, appeared defenseless, not retaliating throughout the bullying.
In one clip, the attacker donned a mask handed by a friend before escalating the violence, while the crowd shouted encouragement, urged others to crouch for better views, and cheered the assaults without anyone stepping in to help.
Netizens reacted with shock and anger, labeling the event outright bullying and criticizing the bystanders' heartless behavior as complicit in normalizing violence.
Many called the scene "heart-chilling," predicted swift arrests for the assailant, and advised the victim to report to police for assault charges and medical examination.
Comments dubbed it the "first major spectator drama" of 2026, reminiscent of old Mong Kok street fights, with some joking that modern Kwun Tong has surpassed Mong Kok in such "ecological diversity."
The promenade, recently spotlighted as a Gen Z hangout following New Year's Eve festivities, has faced increased police patrols amid rising teen-related incidents in the district.
