The Education Bureau confirmed the change on Monday in response to enquiries, stating it has already informed the five affected primary schools. The decision shifts the students from the Islands District (NET NT9) to the Wan Chai District (NET HK 2) school network.
The bureau said the review was triggered by the planned closure of Cheung Chau Government Secondary School, which will affect secondary school choices for Islands District Primary Six students. Factors considered included student travel time and cost, the number of school options in relevant areas, Form One place supply and demand, and past allocation data.
Cheung Chau Government Secondary School, which currently has one approved Form One class this academic year, is set to merge with Tang Shiu Kin Victoria Government Secondary School starting from the 2026/27 school year. The three-year merger plan, announced by the school in October, cited factors such as declining school-age population, overall government school development and public fund utilization.
Under the plan, current Senior Secondary (Forms 4-6) students will complete their studies at the Cheung Chau campus. Junior Secondary (Forms 1-3) students will transfer to Tang Shiu Kin Victoria Government Secondary School after finishing Form 3. The merger is scheduled for completion in the 2028/29 school year.
Once Cheung Chau Government Secondary School closes, there will be no aided secondary school on the island. The bureau stated it consulted stakeholders and the Secondary School Places Allocation Committee before finalizing the school network adjustment.
