The accident occurred around 2.20pm today. Witnesses saw the man plummet heavily and lie unconscious on the remote mountaintop.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, and the Government Flying Service airlifted him to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3.47pm despite resuscitation efforts.
Chu, who had taken up paragliding after retirement as a construction site supervisor and trained in Taiwan with his own equipment, was known for caution—checking weather and flying with friends—but was alone today.
Police are currently investigating the incident.
