The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) stated that a task force has been set up on Thursday to investigate possible corruption linked to the renovation project of Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po.
The devastating five-alarm fire at the residential complex has resulted in at least 55 deaths, including one firefighter so far.
“The Commission extends our deepest condolences to families of the deceased, the injured, and those affected,” it said.
The corruption watchdog is conducting a comprehensive investigation into potential corruption related to the maintenance project in light of significant public interest involved in the incident.
During rescue operations, firefighters discovered that the buildings’ exterior was covered with suspected materials that may not have complied with fire safety standards, including protective netting, waterproof tarpaulin and plastic sheeting.
Another unaffected block was also found to have foam insulation sealing the windows of every elevator hallway on each floor, which could have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
Police have arrested two directors and one engineering consultant from the responsible company, aged between 52 and 68, on suspicion of "manslaughter" on gross negligence leading to death and serious injuries.
