The accident occurred at around 11pm when a taxi turning right from King's Road into Tong Shui Road struck the man while attempting to avoid an elderly woman pushing a cart.
According to the taxi driver, he initially braked suddenly to avoid the woman crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing. The woman was unharmed though items from her cart scattered across the road.
As the taxi proceeded, it then hit a man who reportedly dashed across the road against the traffic signal. The impact caused the pedestrian to fall to the ground unconscious.
Paramedics arriving at the scene found the man with head and hand injuries but maintaining breathing and pulse. He was urgently transported to Eastern Hospital for emergency treatment due to the seriousness of his condition.
Police cordoned off the area to investigate the cause of the accident.
