Water samples from Taikoo Shing residential complex have confirmed black particles in tap water are asphalt deposits that pose no health risks, according to the Water Supplies Department.
Laboratory analysis completed Sunday showed all samples met Hong Kong's drinking water standards, with black sediment identified as inert asphalt particles stirred up during water supply adjustments near the estate.
The department attributed the issue to pressure changes during recent water supply operations that dislodged asphalt deposits from pipes. Damaged filter screens at the estate's public water pipe intake have been repaired, with enhanced pipe flushing implemented.
Cleaning of affected buildings' underground water storage tanks began during off-peak hours Sunday night, with rooftop tank cleaning scheduled for Monday. Approximately 14 buildings in phases four and five were primarily affected.
The department has dispatched staff to flush water meters and water heater inlets, completing about 100 meter cleanings by Sunday evening. Temporary water supply stations remain available while the estate establishes service counters to address resident concerns.
