Nine arrested in police crackdown on dangerous and illegal racing in Kowloon

Hong Kong police have arrested nine men aged between 25 and 48 in a joint traffic enforcement operation targeting dangerous driving and illegal street racing across East and West Kowloon.

The operation, conducted by the Traffic Enforcement and Control Units from both regions, led to arrests for offenses including speeding, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and driving without third-party insurance.

Four of the arrested men have been released on bail pending further investigation and are required to report to police in early December.

During the operation, officers detected a private car traveling at nearly 170 kilometers per hour on the Tseung Kwan O Tunnel Road — where the speed limit is 70 km/h. Two foreign men were also arrested for dangerous driving, while a local man was detained on suspicion of drink-driving. Two other local drivers were arrested for failing to settle outstanding fines.

Police also identified 10 vehicles suspected of illegal modifications or breaching the Road Traffic (Construction and Maintenance of Vehicles) Regulations.

Preliminary inspections revealed suspected alterations such as modified exhaust pipes, rear spoilers extending beyond the body frame, customized steering wheels, and cracked windshields. The vehicles have been impounded for further examination, while seven others were issued defective vehicle reports.

The operation saw officers deployed in unmarked police vehicles to patrol major highways including Tai Po Road, Lung Cheung Road, Ching Cheung Road, the West Kowloon Highway, and the West Kowloon Corridor, focusing on illegal racing and speeding activities. 

Digital radar detectors set up across various locations in West Kowloon captured 289 speeding vehicles, with summonses to be issued to the respective drivers later.

Police reiterated their zero-tolerance stance against dangerous driving and illegal street racing, emphasizing that enforcement operations will continue to ensure road safety.
