A minibus driver's suspected misreading of a traffic signal caused a collision with a light rail train in Tuen Mun early Sunday, leaving 12 people injured.
The incident occurred around 12.48am, where a green minibus traveling along Tsing Lun Road towards Lam Tei direction collided with a route 615B light rail train.
The force of the impact sent the light rail train sliding several meters before it came to a stop, partially derailed, while the front of the minibus was severely crushed in the collision.
The 64-year-old male minibus driver, surnamed Fung, sustained leg injuries and was trapped in the vehicle, requiring firefighters to extract him. The 34-year-old light rail captain, surnamed Ho, suffered a head injury.
They were among twelve people injured in the crash—including six male and four female passengers aged 16 to 66—all of whom were conscious and transported to Tuen Mun Hospital.
Following a preliminary investigation, officers indicated that both the captain and the minibus driver passed alcohol tests, but they suspect the minibus driver may have misread the traffic signals.
The minibus driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and remains in custody for further questioning.
In response to media inquiries, MTR confirmed that the collision between the 615B light rail and the minibus occurred around 12.40am on Sunday (Nov 2), noting the light rail captain and injured passengers were taken to the hospital for treatment.
MTR stated that the light rail was operating according to the traffic signals at the time of the incident after a review of the driving records.
Although the light rail service was slightly disrupted, the impact on commuters was minimal as the incident occurred close to the end of daily service.
