As the 15th National Games approach, Hong Kong is gearing up to host a spectacular road cycling event across the Greater Bay Area, with preparations including temporary road closures and vibrant beautification projects to ensure a safe and visually stunning experience for athletes and spectators.
Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan announced that the road cycling race, spanning Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau, will feature a Hong Kong segment traversing iconic routes such as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, North Lantau Highway, and areas near Disneyland.
To ensure athlete safety, the Highways Department and police conducted a drill earlier this month, temporarily closing sections of the North Lantau Highway and covering road seams with rubber mats, a process completed in under five minutes.
During the race, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge will face temporary traffic controls, with the Transport Department coordinating with affected service operators to adjust staffing and schedules accordingly.
Beyond safety measures, the Highways Department has undertaken beautification efforts around key venues to enhance the event’s appeal.
Along the cycling route, colorful and long-blooming bougainvillea plants have been added to both sides of the east and west lanes.
Near the Hong Kong Velodrome in Hang Hau, pedestrian tunnels, elevators, and floor tiles have been revamped with fresh designs.
Similarly, Kai Tak Sports Park, Victoria Park, and the Central Harbourfront have seen upgrades, with tiles and manhole covers featuring National Games-themed designs, creating countless photo opportunities for visitors and locals alike. These enhancements aim to showcase Hong Kong’s vibrancy and create a festive atmosphere for the Games.
