Thirty-one passengers were issued summonses on Friday (Oct 24), after Kowloon East traffic officers went undercover as passengers to crack down on those failing to wear seatbelts on public minibuses.
The enforcement operation, conducted by the Traffic Enforcement and Control Division of the Kowloon East Regional Headquarters, focused on violations involving passengers who did not properly fasten their seatbelts. During the inspection, officers disguised as commuters boarded several public minibuses.
According to the Road Traffic (Safety Equipment) Regulations, all passengers on minibuses equipped with seatbelts must wear them. Offenders are liable to a maximum fine of HK$5,000 and imprisonment for up to three months.
Police said they will continue similar operations to promote road safety and ensure smooth traffic flow.
