Michael Tien Puk-sun, a member of the Roundtable, has announced that he will not seek re-election to the Legislative Council. Instead, he intends to contribute to Hong Kong through alternative avenues.
The Roundtable party will nominate Mark Chong Ho-fung as its candidate for the upcoming Legislative Council election.
At 75 years of age, Tien has been a member of the Legislative Council since 2012. Several lawmakers aged over 70, including Tommy Cheung Yu-yan, Jeffrey Lam Kin-fung, and Chan Kin-por, have also announced to step down from the Council.
In light of the decision by many senior members not to pursue re-election, Tien has taken time to reflect on his future, considering the significance of the Roundtable's pragmatic approach alongside his personal re-election ambitions.
Tien expressed confidence in Chong's alignment with his principles and hopes that his supporters will endorse Chong as his successor.
Chong, in turn, acknowledged and respected Tien's decision, noting their productive collaboration over the past seven years in addressing local concerns.
He has committed to continuing to represent local interests within the Legislative Council, particularly regarding issues such as the Tai Lam Tunnel.
