Wong Tsz-to, a member of Hong Kong’s triathlon team, is intensifying preparations for the 15th National Games, including high-altitude training in Kunming, as he aims to secure medals in the triathlon events hosted in Hong Kong’s Central Harbourfront and Victoria Harbour this November.
Wong, a dedicated member of Hong Kong’s triathlon team, has spent the past six months rigorously preparing for the 15th National Games, where the triathlon is a featured event in the Hong Kong region.
His training regimen included a stint in Kunming for high-altitude endurance work, which he believes has significantly boosted his performance, particularly in speed, upon returning to sea level. With ambitions to see Hong Kong athletes on the podium in the men’s, women’s, and mixed relay events, Wong is optimistic about the team’s prospects.
The triathlon, comprising swimming, cycling, and running, is set to take place on November 15 and 16 at the Central Harbourfront Event Space and Victoria Harbour.
Competing on home turf has Wong particularly excited, as he anticipates strong support from local spectators. Unlike many overseas triathlon venues, which are often remote with minimal crowd presence, the vibrant setting of Central offers a unique opportunity for athletes to feed off the energy of cheering fans.
This enthusiastic atmosphere, he feels, will provide a significant boost to the team’s morale and performance.
Beyond personal and team goals, Wong sees the event as a chance to elevate the sport’s profile in Hong Kong, especially among younger generations.
The Triathlon Association of Hong Kong China is actively promoting duathlon events, which combine swimming and running, as a safer and simpler entry point to the sport.
By hosting the National Games, Wong hopes the visibility of the triathlon will inspire more teenagers to take up these activities, potentially progressing to the full triathlon over time.
With the event drawing near, he encourages the public to come out and cheer, fostering both team spirit and broader interest in the sport.
