A cockroach spotted scurrying across Hong Kong’s streets while hauling a cigarette butt has set social media ablaze, with netizens joking that the city’s creepy crawlies have evolved into chain-smoking rebels, prompting a wave of hilarious online banter.
On October 14, a video posted on the social platform Threads captured the bizarre sight of a cockroach dragging a lengthy cigarette butt along the pavement, zigzagging as if on a mission.
The uploader humorously dubbed it evidence of “evolution,” playfully warning that munching on cigarettes while scooting around isn’t exactly a healthy habit.
The clip quickly gained traction, with viewers chiming in with their own witty takes. Some likened the cockroach to a steam locomotive chugging along with its smoky cargo, while others jokingly suggested it was riding a “vapor motorcycle” instead.
Skeptics questioned whether the video was AI-generated, but others quickly dispelled doubts by sharing their own encounters with similar scenes, including photos and clips of cigarette-chomping critters.
One user claimed to have seen multiple cockroaches gathered around a single butt, while another swore they’d spotted a snail indulging in the same peculiar pastime. The online crowd erupted with theories: the cockroach wasn’t smoking, they argued, but desperately searching for a lighter, as the cigarette appeared unlit.
Others suggested the insect was just posing with the butt to look cool, much like a rebellious teenager sneaking a puff to seem tough.
The cockroach’s antics sparked a flood of playful commentary.
Some netizens speculated that the creature was under immense stress, resorting to a cigarette to cope, or perhaps it was the reincarnated soul of a heavy smoker now trapped in an insect’s body.
The bug was branded the “naughtiest cockroach” and accused of having a serious nicotine addiction.
Yet, some couldn’t help but admire its audacity, marveling at its “impressive lung capacity” and relaxed vibe.
A few even found the scene oddly endearing, joking that the cockroach might break into a dance or was simply doing its civic duty by carting the butt to a trash bin.
