Technician arrested for allegedly inciting courthouse arson on social media

A 60-year-old man was arrested in Yuen Long after allegedly posting messages on a government social media page encouraging others to set fire to courts, prompting a police investigation into his motives.

Hong Kong police arrested a 60-year-old local man in Yuen Long yesterday (Sep 29), following reports of inflammatory comments made on a Customs and Excise Department social media page. 

The messages allegedly urged others to commit arson and attempt to burn down a courthouse. 

The arrest was carried out by the Kwun Tong police district, which also seized a mobile phone during the operation. 

The suspect, who reportedly works as a technician for an electronics recycling company, remains in custody as authorities continue to investigate his motives.

Preliminary findings suggest the man may have posted similar messages across various social media platforms. 

Under Hong Kong’s Criminal Procedure Ordinance, inciting or assisting others to commit crimes, including arson, is a serious offense that carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. 

Police suspect the suspect made multiple related statements, though the reasons behind his actions are still under scrutiny.

Authorities emphasized that while freedom of speech is respected, it is not without boundaries. 

They stressed that the online world is not beyond the reach of the law, and individuals must take responsibility for their statements. The investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the suspect’s actions and any potential broader implications.
