As Super Typhoon Ragasa batters Hong Kong with violent winds and massive waves, a man sparked public outrage by ignoring safety warnings to play in the storm surge at Tseung Kwan O Promenade on Wednesday morning (September 24).
The incident, captured in videos shared online, showed the shirtless man wearing only swimming trunks wading through flooded areas of the promenade as waves towered over him.
He was seen sitting on a bench along the inundated walkway and casually lingering to watch the destructive waves even as they surged to heights exceeding his own.
The promenade, already heavily damaged by Ragasa’s storm surge, was described as resembling a "water park" by the netizen who filmed the scene.
The man’s actions drew fierce criticism online, with many condemning him for selfishly endangering himself and potential rescue workers.
"Why not just stay home during a typhoon?" the original poster questioned, noting that a mother and son were already in intensive care due to the storm.
A family member of a firefighter echoed the sentiment.
“Could you please not come out and harm others? Every time there’s a typhoon, I fear seeing such people who’d force my husband to risk his life for a rescue".
The sentiment was widely shared, with others calling the behavior "irresponsible" and suggested reporting the incident to police.
