The government appointed Bernard Charnwut Chan on Tuesday as the Chairman of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA) Board for a two-year term starting on October 1, succeeding Henry Tang Ying-yen.
Chan, the current Vice-Chairman of the board, has been a member for several years and is well acquainted with the WKCD project.
The Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Rosanna Law Shuk-pui, stated that Chan's extensive experience in administrative management and public service, along with his broad business network, will enable him to lead the WKCDA in developing West Kowloon into a world-acclaimed cultural tourism landmark.
In response, Chan expressed gratitude for the appointment and emphasized his commitment to exploring new revenue sources to achieve long-term financial sustainability for the district.
Meanwhile, Law expressed her gratitude to outgoing Chairman Tang for his tremendous contributions to the WKCD's development over the years.
“Through the unwavering support of local and international partners, the West Kowloon Cultural District has rapidly grown into a globally recognized and prestigious cultural landmark in just a few short years,” Tang said.
He also extended gratitude to the government for last year's approval to relax the "Enhanced Financial Arrangement," a move he said has laid a solid foundation for the authority's development and furthered its goal of financial self-sufficiency.
