The car was on the right lane on the three-lane Nathan Road, heading toward Tsim Sha Tsui, when it allegedly cut into a lane and collided with a dump truck near Eaton Hotel.
The Mustang driver, a man surnamed Chau, 31, was said to have lost control of his vehicle, which barreled 60 meters onto a pedestrian sidewalk and crashed into a bus stop.
The car then rammed the stone steps leading to an HSBC bank outlet before bouncing back onto the road.
Chau was arrested for suspicion of dangerous driving causing death and is currently being detained by the Kowloon West special investigation team of traffic.
The front of the Mustang was completely wrecked and its side bore many scratches.
The glass front door of the HSBC outlet was shattered after the accident and part of the stone steps smashed into pieces.
Chau sustained head injuries but remained conscious as rescuers arrived at the scene.
But his passenger Lam, although showing no superficial injury, was found unconscious in the vehicle.
They were both rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, but Lam was certified dead three hours after the accident.
The 63-year-old male driver of the rubbish truck, Wong, did not sustain any injuries and was let go after staying at the scene to help with the investigation.
The Mustang was towed to a vehicle examination center.
Police called for any witness or anyone who has information to contact officers at 3661-9062.
