In a disappointing turn for Hong Kong's inaugural AIA International Hot Air Balloon Fest, organizers have pledged full refunds to all ticket holders after safety regulations grounded the event's marquee attraction—manned hot air balloon rides—sparking widespread frustration and calls from lawmakers for sharper government oversight to safeguard the city's event-hosting reputation.
The AIA International Hot Air Balloon Fest Hong Kong faced significant challenges after authorities denied approval for manned hot air balloon rides due to safety concerns, leading the organizer to announce full refunds for affected ticket holders.
In a radio program, Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong lawmaker Holden Chow Ho-ding acknowledged that the authorities’ decision to reject the balloon rides on safety grounds was reasonable.
However, he suggested that if the government had foreseen the issue earlier, it should have intervened sooner to prevent any negative impact on Hong Kong’s reputation.
Business and Professionals Alliance member Lo Wai-kwok emphasized that the authorities should have anticipated the venue’s unsuitability for hot air balloon rides and worked with the organizer proactively to avoid the situation.
Liberal Party member Peter Shiu Ka-fai supported the idea of hosting more major events but stressed the need to assess their economic benefits carefully.
He called for stricter government oversight to ensure such events are well-executed and contribute positively to Hong Kong’s economy.
