Hong Kong police announced on Tuesday that they have arrested 13 individuals, including the alleged mastermind, in connection with a murder in Hung Shui Kiu that is believed to be linked to a dispute over profits from illegal activities.
The victim, a 51-year-old man, died from excessive blood loss after sustaining a knife wound to the right side of his head during an ambush.
The incident occurred early Monday morning when the victim was found unconscious on the roadside with a fatal knife injury to the back of his head.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, and a bloodstained seven-seater vehicle was discovered nearby.
Police revealed that the victim was ambushed around 1am on Monday while leaving his residence in the seven-seater.
Two vehicles intercepted his car, forcing him to flee on foot before he was caught and attacked from behind.
Investigations further uncovered that a male relative of the victim had been abducted and held captive at the victim’s residence before the murder.
The relative managed to free himself and alert the police.
Preliminary findings suggest the crime was motivated by financial disputes related to illegal activities, including the illicit cigarette trade.
Between Monday and Tuesday, police arrested 10 men and 3 women, aged 25 to 65, in operations across Tin Shui Wai, the airport, Tai Po, and Tsuen Wan.
Those arrested include the alleged mastermind of the attack, and some are known to have triad affiliations.
They face charges including murder and false imprisonment. Three vehicles connected to the crime have been recovered.
Authorities confirmed that some suspects remain at large, including individuals who may have fled overseas.
The New Territories North Regional Crime Unit is leading the investigation and has classified the case as murder. Police operations to apprehend remaining suspects are ongoing.
