Footage of where a 36-year-old mobile phone shop employee was severely injured in a knife attack at Leung King Plaza in Tuen Mun on Friday was posted online Saturday, with police later arresting a 17-year-old Pakistani teenager holding a Hong Kong ID card.
According to investigators, the attack stemmed from a dispute the previous day (Aug 14) when the suspect, a South Asian youth, allegedly became angry after failing to complete a real-name registration process for a SIM card purchase.
Security camera footage circulating online today showed the masked suspect storming into the shop, smashing display cabinets with a hammer, and demanding money from the victim, surnamed Leung, before slashing his hands at least 10 times with a 30-centimeter-long sashimi knife.
The footage revealed Leung attempting to defend himself with a cushion before fleeing while bleeding. The assailant briefly left but returned to steal cash from the counter. Police said the victim, who suffered multiple injuries, was conscious when taken to Tuen Mun Hospital.
Officers arrested the suspect in a nearby housing estate stairwell, recovering all stolen items.
The case has been handed over to the Tuen Mun police district for further investigation.
