A 20-year-old male worker died on Friday after being struck by a rail engineering vehicle at MTR's Siu Ho Wan Depot on Lantau Island.
The incident occurred around noon today when the worker, surnamed Lam, was hit from behind by a runaway rail engineering vehicle.
Police investigations indicate the vehicle suddenly rolled backward as Lam was walking behind it, pinning him against a wall.
Lam sustained severe abdominal and left thigh injuries with profuse bleeding, according to emergency responders.
Colleagues rescued the trapped worker before ambulance arrival.
The unconscious victim was rushed to Princess Margaret Hospital but succumbed to his injuries at 6.14pm despite emergency treatment.
It is understood that the deceased joined the MTR as an apprentice last September and had been working in the locomotive maintenance team.
At around 11am today, a driver reversed an engineering train with two carriages into the Siu Ho Wan Depot for repairs.
After parking the train, the driver activated the train's braking system to secure all three carriages.
Due to a slight slope on the ground, a male technician placed two wheel chocks on the wheels of the last carriage to prevent the train from rolling backward.
At the time, there was a gap of about 50 centimeters between the last carriage and the wall, and another staff member used barrier tape to cordon off the gap on both sides.
Around noon, the victim attempted to leave for lunch. It is reported that he passed through the gap between the train and the wall instead of using the designated exit route.
Suddenly, the train rolled backward, pinning him between the train and the wall.
Colleagues rushed to rescue him and eventually had the train driver move the carriages forward to free him, but the incident tragically ended in fatality.
