A 35-year-old Filipino tourist's journey ended in tragedy on Tuesday outside the Nina Hotel Tseun Wan West, where a taxi driver lost control of his vehicle and claimed the traveler's life before his departure.
The incident occurred around 1.55 pm, when a taxi unexpectedly crashed into the hotel's exterior, knocking the tourist to the ground.
According to an approximately 11-second video circulating online, the victim was carrying his luggage while looking at his phone as he stepped out of the hotel.
However, a taxi sped towards him, resulting in a collision that trapped him between the marble columns and the vehicle. The force of the impact shattered the marble columns, severely damaging the front of the taxi.
Rescue personnel rushed the unconscious tourist to Princess Margaret Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Additionally, the 70-year-old taxi driver, who suffered from minor injuries, was also sent to the hospital.
Sources indicated that the deceased was in Hong Kong with several friends and had planned to depart after checking out of the hotel.
Meanwhile, the taxi driver, who had been waiting outside, reportedly felt dizzy before attempting to drive away. Unfortunately, he lost control of the cab and resulting in the fatal accident.
The cause of the incident is currently under investigation.
The taxi driver has been arrested for suspected dangerous driving causing death and is currently detained for investigation.
