Hong Kong Disneyland Resort (HKDL) is celebrating its 20th anniversary by spreading joy where it’s needed most—with a commitment of over HK$5 million to support child patients and youth development. The initiative includes transforming hospital spaces into Disney-themed havens, a youth dance challenge, and more.
HK Disneyland donates over HK$5 million to bring joy to child patients and empower youth
The donation focuses on two key areas: improving the hospital experience for child patients and supporting youth development initiatives. As part of this milestone celebration, HKDL unveiled its new hospital-focused initiative at Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH), where Disney characters and volunteers brought joy and magic to young patients during the “PlayWell with Disney 20th Anniversary Magical Party,” extending the anniversary party spirit beyond the resort.
Bringing comfort to child patients through Disney magic
To make hospital visits a less intimidating experience for children, HKDL is dedicating more than HK$2.5 million to transform spaces in eight public hospitals, including Tuen Mun Hospital and The Duchess of Kent Children’s Hospital at Sandy Bay. These spaces will feature Disney-themed murals and a Mobile Movie Theatre with complimentary Disney+ access, creating a more imaginative and comforting environment for young patients undergoing treatment.
Tuen Mun Hospital is the first to undergo this magical transformation. Its newly enhanced waiting and activity areas were unveiled earlier this month.
Eleven-year-old Tsz Huen, who has been battling an autoimmune disease, expressed her excitement about the new space. “The whole place is so colorful with murals of many Disney characters. I am so happy and excited to see the changes!”
Twelve-year-old An Yu, who has been receiving treatment for anemia since childhood, shared a similar feeling. “The waiting area used to feel dull, but now it’s so cheerful and bright. It’s amazing to have a bit of Disneyland in the hospital.”
A magical celebration for young patients
In a heartwarming gesture, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse made a surprise appearance at the hospital’s first “20th Anniversary Magical Party.” Alongside Disney VoluntEARS and performers from HKDL’s entertainment team, the beloved characters brought smiles to more than 100 young patients, their families, and hospital staff.
The event included colorful decorations, mini-game booths, singing and dancing, creating an unforgettable party atmosphere. Henry Fan, Chairman of the Hospital Authority, praised the initiative and expressed appreciation to HKDL for its support and donation, which enhance their patient-centric initiatives and improve the overall hospital experience for patients.
Michael Moriarty, Managing Director of Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, also shared his thoughts on this significant milestone. “In collaboration with the Hospital Authority and dedicated medical staff, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort has been supporting child patients for 20 years. We are pleased to say that, over time, we have brought joy to over a thousand child patients in hospitals throughout the city.”
He added: “Every small act counts. When you see the smiles on the faces of these children, it makes all the effort put into bringing these ideas to life worthwhile. So let’s keep going!”
Dr Li Chak Ho, Deputy Hospital Chief Executive at TMH, also pointed out that they are very pleased to see the waiting areas transformed into more vibrant spaces. “From my observations, the children appear more cheerful and relaxed during their time at the hospital. This atmosphere also helps to alleviate their anxiety about visiting. We are also delighted to work in a happier and more relaxed environment!”
Expanding magic beyond the hospital
In addition to the hospital-focused initiative, HKDL is donating 200,000 theme park tickets through its “Gift of Happiness: Hong Kong Disneyland 20th Anniversary Magical Ticket Donation” program. “This effort has already received over 500 applications from local non-profit organizations, aiming to share the magic of Disneyland with underserved families and individuals across the city,” said Anita Lai, Vice President,Communication and Public Affairs of HKDL.
These initiatives by HKDL are part of The Walt Disney Company’s global mission to support seriously ill children. The company recently fulfilled a US$100 million commitment to children’s hospitals and pediatric care facilities in 45 countries, enhancing the lives of countless young patients worldwide.
Two decades of making a magical impact
Over the past 20 years, HKDL has made a significant impact on Hong Kong’s community, economy, and tourism. Through its Disney VoluntEARS program, the resort has contributed nearly 123,000 volunteer hours to support initiatives for young patients, children with disabilities, and underserved youth.
The resort’s efforts include projects such as wish granting, the “Dress Well” initiative at Hong Kong Children’s Hospital, the “PlayWell with Disney” program, and social adaptation training for children with special educational needs. These programs inspire youth to embrace their potential, develop their skills, and pursue their dreams.
HKDL’s contributions extend beyond community service, as the resort generated HK$12.4 billion in added value for Hong Kong’s economy during the fiscal year 2024 and created approximately 22,000 jobs.
Looking ahead: a future full of possibilities
As Hong Kong Disneyland celebrates two decades of spreading magic, it looks forward to building on its legacy of care and community impact.
With a renewed focus on innovation, sustainability, and community engagement, HKDL represents a cornerstone of joy and inspiration in Hong Kong as it embarks on the next chapter of its magical journey.
