Hong Kong’s swimming star Siobhan Haughey has pulled out of the world championships in Singapore due to a back injury.
In a statement shared on her Instagram account, Haughey explained: “I’m sad to miss out on the opportunity to compete against the best in the world, but right now I have to do what’s best for me.”
The four-time Olympic medallist emphasised the challenges faced by elite athletes, noting that while they’re trained to persist through discomfort, sometimes the best decision is to prioritize health.
While she voiced her disappointment at missing the event, she still affirmed her support for the Hong Kong team, saying: “I can’t wait to be back racing at the world stage again. But in the meantime, I will be cheering for the Hong Kong team and my friends from afar. Hope to see you all at the pool soon again.”
The Hong Kong China Swimming Association confirmed the news, saying that Haughey withdrew from the Singapore race to ensure her best state for the National Games in November.
“[Haughey] has been training hard for the competition, resulting in a back strain,” the association said in a statement.
“Following treatment by a physiotherapist from the Hong Kong Sports Institute, her condition has relieved but is still recurring. After careful deliberation, the coaching team believed that it is not appropriate for her to take part in high-intensity events at this stage.”
Haughey has been a force in women’s swimming worldwide, with podium finishes at the Olympics, World Championships, and the Asian Games.
The 27-year-old’s absence in Singapore is a blow for the Hong Kong squad, who will have to continue without their top star.
