The document submitted by the Security Bureau to the Legislative Council stated that the main building covers an area of about 674,700 square meters and has a total of ten floors.
The top two floors will serve as immigration facilities and will be the first Port to implement the "collaborative inspection and joint clearance" arrangement -- allowing travelers to complete immigration procedures at both locations in a single place.
The facility will feature 134 automated "collaborative inspection" channels and 68 manual counters, handling a daily design capacity of 200,000 passenger trips.
Regarding the financial arrangement, the Shenzhen authorities will bear the design and construction costs of the entire redevelopment project, while the Hong Kong government will pay a nominal annual rent of 1,000 yuan.
Separately, lawmaker Chan Yuet-ming raised questions over the "document-free" passage under the collaborative inspection arrangement applied at the new port.
Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung responded that the contactless channel technology used in Hong Kong has minor differences from that in the mainland.
He stated that the card-based systems will still be applied under the collaborative inspection and joint clearance arrangement, emphasizing the potential for future improvements.
