The Observatory recorded a shocking daily maximum temperature of 34.3 degrees on Monday, the highest in recorded history for the 24 Solar Terms "Moderate Heat" since 1884.
The previous hottest record for "Moderate Heat" -- or Xiaoshu -- was set in July 2016 at 34 degrees and once again recorded last year.
Temperatures in different districts across the city rose to 35 degrees, with Sheung Shui recording the highest temperature of 37.5 degrees.
The Very Hot Weather Warning signal has been in effect throughout the day, and the forecaster is issuing special announcements to remind the public to drink sufficient water and seek help immediately if needed.
The Observatory also alerted citizens to take heat stroke prevention measures in the following weeks to prevent extreme heat.
Under the influence of a southwesterly airstream, the weather will be very hot with showers over the coast of Guangdong. A trough of low pressure is expected to bring heavy showers and thunderstorms to Guangdong and the northern part of the South China Sea in the middle and latter parts of this week.
