A hit-and-run accident in Yuen Long on Tuesday evening (Jul 1) has left a cyclist dead, with a couple arrested today after their grandson allegedly drove their car.
The accident occurred at 6.28pm when the private car traveling along Long Ping Road toward Tin Shui Wai struck the elderly man, who was riding a bicycle. However, the car failed to stop and fled the scene.
The 71-year-old male cyclist, surnamed Ng, sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to Pok Oi Hospital unconscious. He was pronounced dead at 7.06pm.
Sources reported that Ng was thrown approximately 20 meters upon impact before falling to the ground, while the bicycle was flung about 10 meters away.
The vehicle’s owners -- a 67-year-old man surnamed Yim and a 57-year-old woman surnamed Chiu -- were detained on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death, failing to stop after an accident, and failing to report an accident this morning at around 7am.
According to sources, police are searching for the couple’s grandson, who is believed to be the driver at the time of the crash.
The bicycle was shattered with the twisted frame at the scene, while the seat was hurled onto the opposite lane, and one wheel was lodged in the roadside railing.
A pool of blood, a set of dentures, a license plate, and an Audi car emblem were also found scattered on the ground.
The Special Investigation Team of Traffic in New Territories North is handling the ongoing investigation.
Additionally, all lanes on Long Ping Road (toward Tin Shui Wai) near Fung Chi Road remain closed following the accident; drivers are advised to use alternative routes.
