A viral video circulating online captures a brazen act of lawlessness as a man openly ignites illegal fireworks along the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade during a busy hour.
The footage, which was uploaded on Sunday (Jun 8), showed a man wearing glasses and a mask setting off fireworks using a lighter near the railing at the Avenue of Stars.
He made several attempts before successfully igniting the firework amid the wind and immediately walked away once the flame was lit.
Noticing he was being filmed, the man confronted the netizen who was recording, shouting in Mandarin, "Don't, don't film, can you not film?" The clip abruptly ends.
The video poster revealed that the man followed him from the Rosewood Hotel's waterfront to the Hong Kong Museum of Art before finally leaving.
"I didn't want a confrontation," the poster wrote, adding that the suspicious man had another firework in his pocket.
Another video shared online shows at least two fireworks being launched, drawing the crowd's attention. It remains unclear whether these incidents were connected.
The illegal displays sparked heated discussions online, with critics condemning the man's disregard for the law while others raised safety concerns.
Under the Dangerous Goods Ordinance, the illegal possession or discharge of fireworks is an offence that carries a maximum penalty of a HK$25,000 fine and a six-month jail term.
