Commissioner Joe Chow Yat-ming recently discussed the implications of the police arresting two men accused of aiding fugitive Kwok Fung-yee in financial maneuvers involving an insurance policy, stating that as long law is broken, they will enforce the law.
The arrests, which took place in Tseung Kwan O, have ignited discussions about the enforcement of the National Security Law and the Criminal Ordinance.
The two individuals are alleged to have attempted to assist Kwok Fung-yee, a designated fugitive, in modifying and withdrawing funds from an insurance policy, leading to charges of handling funds linked to criminal activities.
During a press conference, Chow clarified the situation, stating that the law is clear and the police are committed to its rigorous enforcement. He mentioned that the notion of setting a precedent does not arise, as every law enforced has its first case.
Chow also highlighted the overall decrease in crime rates in Hong Kong for the first quarter of the year. He emphasized the importance of not becoming complacent and continuing to strive for improvements in public safety.
He added that the police force is focusing on enhancing crime prevention, eradication, and detection through intelligent policing and the effective use of technology. These efforts are expected to significantly boost the efficiency of police operations and potentially halve crime rates.
Having served as ascommissioner for just over a month, Chow has been actively using media platforms to keep the public informed about police operations.
He outlined his strategic focus, which includes maintaining national security, advancing intelligent policing through technology, and strengthening the team culture within the department. Initiatives and discussions have been launched to propel these priorities forward.
