A Kowloon City district councilor said on Monday that he had received complaints from residents about the noise of the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens at Kai Tak Sports Park, calling on organizers to make improvements in the future.
The three-day rugby extravaganza concluded with a fireworks display at the Kai Tak Stadium on Sunday, bringing an end to the Hong Kong Sevens at its new home. More than 38,000 spectators were on hand for the third and final day of the Sevens, according to organisers, with total attendance topping 110,000 visits over three days.
Speaking to a radio program this morning, Kowloon City district councillor Cheung King-fan said many residents living close to the sports park have reported being affected by the noise generated from the fan village.
To avoid disturbances to nearby residents, the organizers had previously advanced the closure time of the fan village to 10.30pm on Friday and Saturday, with an even earlier closing time at 7pm on Sunday.
He said some residents living along Muk Tai Street complained to him that the bass from the park’s sound system is quite strong, affecting their rest time during the evenings or at midday.
A significant number of residents have been impacted by the noise, particularly those residing in a private housing estate directly facing the fan village, said Cheung.
He hoped authorities would improve sound arrangements in future fan village events, and he plans to address these concerns with the district council and the Environmental Protection Department.
Meanwhile, the district councilor praised railway operator MTR Corporation and bus firms for their smooth transportation arrangements.
However, he suggested a need to bolster bus services along Shing Kai Road or Shing Fung Road, and a need for additional cross-border and airport bus routes to enhance convenience for travelers.
