The Hong Kong Sevens is expecting a record-breaking attendance of 139,000 from this Friday to Sunday as the three-day tournament takes place in the new Kai Tak Stadium for the first time.
Organizers said with over 130,000 tickets sold—setting a new record—the Sevens is set to deliver a weekend of action-packed music, excitement, and intrigue to its largest crowd ever in the 50,000-seat stadium.
“We are extremely proud to be staging the debut international sports event at the magnificent Kai Tak Stadium," Chris Brooke said, chairman of organizers Hong Kong China Rugby, the city's governing body of the sport.
"We feel very fortunate to be able to help strengthen the role of Hong Kong as one of the world’s most vibrant and accessible destinations for major international events. I am confident that the 2025 Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens will ring in the new stadium in suitable Sevens style,” he added.
The Hong Kong tournament is the fifth on the eight-round World Rugby Sevens Series, where teams compete for the championship title by accumulating points based on their finishing position in each tournament.
On the men’s side, Argentina, at 68 points, are the season’s pacesetters and have seemingly found consistency, arriving off of back-to-back wins, following titles in Vancouver and, before that, in Perth.
Los Pumas hold a four-point series lead over second-placed Spain, while two points further back sit customary powerhouses Fiji, eyeing for a 20th Hong Kong title, and South Africa, still searching for a first win in the city.
In the women’s competition, rivals New Zealand, at 76 points, and Australia, at 70 points, are battling out again. New Zealand recently won their second tournament of the season in Vancouver, defeating Fiji 41-7, and have also finished in second place twice this season.
With only three rounds left in the season, it is a tight race for the championship.
