The accident occurred around 4am when the Tunnels implemented a one-tube-two-way operation. The driver of a Mercedes reportedly lost control of his vehicle, veered into the opposing lane and collided with a taxi, which subsequently overturned.
The seven-seaters behind the taxi failed to stop in time and collided with the cab, trapping the driver and passenger inside the flipped vehicle.
Following the collision, the Mercedes was left blocking both directions of traffic, while the taxi was jammed between the two private cars.
The 53-year-old male taxi driver, surnamed Leung, and the 62-year-old male passenger, surnamed Liu, were sent to the hospital due to chest and head injuries.
The 41-year-old female seven-seater driver, surnamed Chan, reported experiencing neck pain and the 27-year-old passenger, Pang, sustained hand injuries.
All four were conscious when transported to the Prince of Wales Hospital, Yan Chai Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital for treatment, respectively.
The witnesses said the Mercedes driver fled the scene, running nearly two kilometers toward the Sha Tin exit.
The police are currently investigating the cause of the incident and looking for the fleeing driver.
