The men’s handball test event took place in the Kai Tak Arena from Saturday to Sunday, featuring four teams: Hong Kong, Guangdong, Macau, and Jiangsu.
In the final on Sunday afternoon, Hong Kong faced off against Jiangsu, who established a comfortable 15-9 lead over the SAR in the first half.
During the second half, Hong Kong managed to narrow Jiangsu’s lead to just three points, but Jiangsu responded with relentless offense, increasing their advantage in the final minutes of the game.
Ultimately, Jiangsu triumphed over Hong Kong with a score of 28-20, claiming the championship, while Guangdong defeated Macau 42-20 to secure third place.
This competition marked the first National Games test event held at the Kai Tak venue, which will officially open in less than a week.
A Guangdong handball athlete noted that the venue was cleaner than the day before, allowing for more comfortable movement during the match.
A spectator expressed satisfaction with the event arrangements, entering the well-lit arena smoothly and likening the atmosphere to that of “a large-scale tournament.”
He also appreciated the ample exits, which facilitated an easy departure from the venue.
Speaking after the handball test event, Yeung Tak-keung, head of the National Games Coordination Office, said: "The two-day competition attracted an attendance of over 4,300 people."
Yeung added that the event, supported by 500 volunteers, provided valuable insights into competition arrangements, including security, accommodation, and catering.
Hong Kong is set to host eight competition events for the 15th National Games, including men's handball, track cycling, fencing, golf, and rugby sevens, along with a mass participation event scheduled for November this year.
