In a thrilling showdown at King Abdulaziz Racecourse in Saudi Arabia early Sunday morning Hong Kong time, Romantic Warrior narrowly missed victory against Japan’s Forever Young in the 2025 Grade 1 Saudi Cup (1800m, dirt). This marked the horse’s first race on dirt, starting from the third gate among 14 competitors.
Jockey James McDonald expertly navigated Romantic Warrior out of the turn, taking the lead and engaging in a fierce battle with Forever Young down the stretch. Although Romantic Warrior briefly overtook his rival, Forever Young surged ahead in the final moments, winning by a neck.
Trainer Danny Shum Chap-shing said: “We gave it our all. Of course, I hope the horse can win every race, but this is horse racing. The horse did his best and put on a great performance against his rivals. I believe everyone enjoyed the process.”
McDonald added: “This horse consistently delivers at a high level, and tonight was no exception. Of course, being beaten by a competitor leaves me feeling a bit disappointed, but he certainly had a strong chance to win and added excitement to the race.”
Owned by Peter Lau Pak-fai, Romantic Warrior was initially purchased for HK$4.8 million. With this second-place finish, the horse’s global record earnings now stand at an impressive HK$207.04 million.
Following the intense competition with Forever Young, Romantic Warrior will soon be shipped back to Meydan in the United Arab Emirates to prepare for the Dubai World Cup on April 5, which features a total prize pool of US$6 million (HK$46.62 million). This 1800-meter turf race will mark Romantic Warrior’s third appearance in the Middle East.
