Executive Council convener Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee suggested on Friday that the SAR should strive to host the "Belt and Road" Games following the National Games and Asian Games, aiming for realization by 2027.
Speaking at an event today, Ip, also the chairwoman of the New People's Party, said it is the right timing for Hong Kong to host the games, as the city sees an increased enthusiasm for sports and the completion of large facilities such as the Kai Tak Sports Park.
She said Hong Kong athletes have been bringing honor to the city by winning medals in international competitions in recent years.
With Hong Kong already hosting events like the LIV Golf Professional Tour, the city is well-prepared to organize more international competitions, thus driving the development of the sports industry, she added.
Speaking at the same event, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui, emphasized the government's commitment to promoting sports development.
She said the budget expenditure for sports development in the 2024-25 fiscal year is estimated to be around HK$7.9 billion, doubling from a decade ago.
The opening of the Kai Tak Sports Park showcases Hong Kong's advantages and potential in hosting major events and entertainment programs, she said, adding such development is expected to boost surrounding merchandise sales, venue management, referee services, and other related industries.
Authorities are determined to leverage the world-class facilities at the Kai Tak Sports Park to drive sports advancement in the city, said Law.
