A viral online post claimed the craze of northbound consumption among Hongkongers has faded, listing three major flaws in spending in Shenzhen.
The post criticized newly built malls in Futian and Nanshan districts as “generic,” believing they are overcrowded with restaurants but lack diverse activities.
Netizens also complained about the rising prices in Shenzhen, considering the price gap between the two cities is gradually narrowing.
However, some netizens believe that traveling north for consumption has evolved from a trend to a habit for some residents.
Others defended Shenzhen’s affordability, commenting that massages and dining remain cheaper than in Hong Kong.
Despite the controversy spreading online, a staggering 423,000 Hong Kong residents were recorded entering Shenzhen through various ports on the final day of the Lunar New Year holiday.
