The man, who was visiting from Kaohsiung, explained in the post on Saturday (Feb 15) that he and seven other family members planned to take a taxi after enjoying the night views at the Peak. However, they were shocked when a taxi driver decided to charge them HK$380 for the ride.
The family of eight finally decided to wait for half an hour and take the Peak Tram instead after the driver offered to lower the price to HK$350.
According to the Transport Department, the metered fare for a taxi ride between Central, Admiralty, and The Peak Galleria is approximately HK$80.
This incident quickly sparked anger among internet users toward the driver, with some suggesting that the traveler should report the driver and provide the license number to the police.
The traveler stated that the unpleasant experience of being overcharged by a taxi would not damage his perception of Hong Kong, and plans to use ride-hailing platforms the next time he visits the city.
Meanwhile, the taxi industry urged the government to announce a timeline for the legislative process regarding the regulation of ride-hailing platforms last week, warning that thousands of drivers may initiate a citywide strike starting March 5 if immediate action is not taken.
