Police were called to Tai Wai on Monday morning after a red muntjac was found dead on Keng Hau Road.
Officers responded to the scene after receiving the report at around 7am and found the deer with severe injuries to the body.
Officers suspected the muntjac could have died in a roadkill, yet nearby residents suggested the animal could have been attacked by wild dogs living in the vicinity.
The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department has been notified to follow up on the incident.
According to the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden, the Northern Red Muntjac, sometimes known as the Barking Deer, is the only native deer species that is found in Hong Kong.
Common causes of injury to these deer include dog attacks, injuries from falling into catchwaters, entrapment in roadside railings and impacts with cars.
