The Major Sports Events Committee (MSEC) announced on Thursday that it has awarded "M" Mark status to the FWD Insurance Chinese New Year Cup 2025, which will be held at the Hong Kong Stadium on February 1, 2025.
The Chinese New Year Cup returns this year with some of the world’s best football players, including Kaká, Rivaldo, Paul Scholes, Cafu, and David Silva. They will participate in a star-studded friendly match against a team of local football stars at the Hong Kong Stadium. This event will be the last held at this venue before moving to the new Kai Tak Sports Park.
Wilfred Ng, the Chairman of the MSEC, emphasized the significance of the Chinese New Year Cup in Hong Kong's cultural heritage, noting it as a traditional highlight during the Chinese New Year celebrations.
He further stated that the MSEC has awarded the 'M' Mark status to the FWD Insurance Chinese New Year Cup 2025 in recognition of its role in promoting sports culture during the festive period.
The "M" Mark System is designed to support local national sports associations and private or non-government organizations in organizing major international sports events and developing them into sustainable endeavors. Events that meet the assessment criteria are eligible for "M" Mark status, which includes funding support for some events.
