The one-day conference on “Powering a Carbon Neutral Future - The Role of Nuclear Energy”, was organized by City University of Hong Kong and CLP Power, with industry professionals, government officials and academics exchanging views on new energy development and its role in Hong Kong’s path to carbon neutrality.
Speakers included World Nuclear Association director general Sama Bilbao Leon, French National Academy of Technologies president honoris causa Yves Bamberger, UK Atomic Energy Authority CEO Ian Chapman, China Energy Research Society executive council member Li Junfeng and former secretary for environment and ecology Wong Kam-sing.
Undersecretary for Environment and Ecology Diane Wong Shuk-han, who officiated the conference, said the administration will promote the development of local hydrogen energy “in a prudent and orderly manner” under the Strategy of Hydrogen Development in Hong Kong released last year.
Wong also said the SAR aims to reduce carbon emissions at source via four major strategies, including net-zero electricity generation, energy saving and green buildings, green transport and waste reduction under Hong Kong’s Climate Action Plan 2050.
The conference also attracted nearly 600 online and offline participants from the energy industry, government departments, advisory bodies, green groups and university students.
