The Observatory has warned that the weather will be cold on the first day of the Lunar New Year (Jan 29), with the lowest temperature expected to hover around 13 degrees.
The watchdog attributes the temperature drop to a cold front forecasted to move across the coast of southern China in the coming Sunday (Jan 26), bringing an intense winter monsoon in the following days.
According to a nine-day weather forecast, the minimum temperature on Lunar New Year's Eve will dip to 11 degrees in urban areas, with a slight increase of 2 degrees anticipated on the first day of the Year of Snake.
However, temperatures in Tai Po, Shek Kong, Sheung Shui, and Sha Tin were only 10 degrees around 6 am, while it was even lower at 8 degrees in Ta Kwu Ling.
