A woman in Admiralty contacted the police on Thursday at noon after suspecting she was involved in a cryptocurrency scam, potentially losing HK$2 million. However, the situation was later clarified as a misunderstanding.
The incident began when the 51-year-old woman, who last November met someone through WeChat, engaged in bitcoin purchases via his mining operations.
From December 27 until today, she has invested millions in cryptocurrency. Concern arose when she was unable to contact the individual she met online. In her attempt to convert the digital currency to cash at a cryptocurrency exchange in Admiralty Centre, the shop employee informed her that they were unfamiliar with the app she was using.
Believing she had been scammed, she promptly contacted the police for assistance.
Fortunately, by the time the police arrived at the scene, communication with the online contact had resumed, and the woman was able to withdraw her cash, and stated that no further police assistance was necessary.
