The redevelopment plan for Ma Tau Wai Estate will be announced next year, while those of Chun Seen Mei Chuen and Lok Man Sun Chuen will be subject to further formulation by the Hong Kong Housing Society, according to Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho Wing-yin.
Lawmaker Kitson Yang Wing-kit suggested expediting the redevelopment of aged public housing estates through land replacement.
In response, Ho cautioned that it will jeopardize the financial viability of Urban Renewal Authority's (URA) redevelopment projects.
She added that such an approach might also thin out URA's resources for redeveloping old and dilapidated private buildings, which she thinks should be given priority, considering the city's rapid aging of private buildings.
Regarding the resettlement of residents affected by the redevelopment plan, Ho stated that the Kai Tak Area 2B1 currently has superstructure works in progress, while the redevelopment site at Shing Tak Street/Ma Tau Chung Road had been tendered to a joint venture developer for private residential development, making both sites unsuitable for rehousing the residents.
