The Observatory issued the No. 8 Northeast Gale or Storm Signal at 11.10 pm tonight as Tropical Storm Toraji further edges closer to the city, and the T8 signal will remain in force at least until 10 am on Thursday (Nov 14).
At 11 pm, Toraji was centred about 170 kilometers south-southeast of Hong Kong and is forecast to move west or west-northwest slowly, edging closer to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary.
The weather watchdog said Toraji adopted a more northerly track towards the coast of Guangdong in the past few hours.
According to the forecast track, Toraji will become closest to the Pearl River Estuary on Thursday morning, skirting around 150 kilometers south of Hong Kong.
There will be occasional squally showers on Thursday, and showers will be heavy at first.
In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Tate's Cairn, Waglan Island and Cheung Chau were 72, 62 and 42 kilometers per hour with maximum gusts exceeding 92, 76 and 60 kilometers per hour respectively.
