The 26 boxes of high-imitation bogus mooncakes seized involved the popular "Maxim's Lava Custard Mooncake". The fake products imitated authentic packaging and their trademark - the genuine product features "Magical" on the front, while the counterfeit misprints it as "Magieal."
Authentic packaging includes anti-counterfeiting labels with QR codes for verification, while the counterfeit ones either lack the labels or cannot be verified.
Some other fake mooncakes and products were imitating brands like Louis Vuitton, a luxury fashion brand that does not produce mooncakes. The items were sold online for about HK$600 to HK$800.
This comes after Customs mounted the special enforcement operation between August 28 and September 9 to combat the sale of counterfeit mooncakes and festive goods.
Over 560 fake items, including lanterns and tableware, were also seized as officers conducted undercover purchases and identified two online accounts selling fake goods.
A Southern District residence was searched, and 26 boxes of fake mooncakes and 28 pieces of fake tableware were seized. Officers also raided three Tuen Mun and Yuen Long retail stores, confiscating 540 counterfeit lanterns.
Two men and three women, aged 21 to 70, were arrested.
