The Hong Kong Observatory said it will issue the Strong Wind Signal Number 3 between 6 pm and 9 pm on Wednesday, as Typhoon Yagi is edging closer to the western part of the south China coast.
The forecaster said Yagi was estimated to be about 510 kilometers southeast of Hong Kong and is forecast to move west at about 10 kilometers per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea and intensify gradually.
In the past few hours, Yagi tracked westwards steadily and intensified. According to the present forecast, local winds will strengthen gradually tonight, with the weather watchdog saying it will consider issuing the Strong Wind Strong Wind Signal Number 3 between 6 pm and 9 pm tonight.
Meanwhile, as Yagi continues to edge closer to the western part of the south China coast, winds in the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary may strengthen further in the latter part of tomorrow. The Observatory also noted that the maximum intensity of Yagi is likely to reach severe typhoon or super typhoon intensity.
Depending on the movement and change of intensity of Yagi, the Observatory said it will assess the need to issue higher tropical cyclone warning signal between tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night.
The Standby Signal Number 1 is currently in force.
