The Office of the Narcotics Control Board of Thailand announced they had successfully intercepted a drug smuggling case at the airport last Thursday (Aug 15), resulting in the arrest of four suspects from Hong Kong who were coordinating the drug procurement, handling, and transportation.
Photos released by authorities show the young suspects alongside 40 boxes of heroin bricks, their passports, and several mobile phones.
Investigators revealed that local law enforcement had been monitoring the suspects since August 11, when they learned that the four would be arriving in Thailand and staying at hotels in the Huai Khwang and Ramkhamhaeng areas.
On the evening of August 14, officers observed one of the suspects, believed to be coordinating the drug procurement, received a suspicious suitcase from a sedan near their hotel.
Around 7 pm on August 15, the four suspects arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport and were arrested by the authorities.
Southeast Asian countries generally impose harsh penalties, including the death sentence, for drug trafficking.
The recent bust follows a similar case reported by the ONCB on June 24, when four Hong Kong men were detained at Suvarnabhumi Airport for allegedly planning to smuggle 14 kg of heroin.
