An MTR train traveling on the East Rail Line had to be evacuated on Wednesday morning after smoke was seen rising from the bottom of it.
Several hundred passengers en route from Admiralty to Lowu were forced to alight at Mong Kok East station. It is understood that apart from the white smoke, there is also a burning smell on the platform.
The passengers were picked up by another train and continued their journey.
An MTR spokesman said the incident happened at around 7 am when the train was entering platform number 2 of the station.
The spokesman said station staffers immediately filed a report with police and arranged for passengers to disembark.
The train will be taken in for checking and repairs, the spokesman added.
