Women's world No 1 epee fencer Vivian Kong Man-wai starts off her Olympic medal bid with a win in her opening bout, booking her place in the last 16.
The top-ranked fencer received a bye in the round of 64 and brushed aside Egypt’s Aya Hussein in the round of 32.
The two fencers started slow and ended the first round with Kong trailing 2-3. The Hong Kong fencer piled up pressure against Hussein in the second round, recovering the loss and led by 11-8.
Kong began to find her range in the final round, ending the bout inside 18 minutes by 15-11.
Kong will next face Hadley Husisian from the United States in the last-16 match at 8.10 pm (HKT).
