Police will replace its revolvers with Chinese-made pistols, while police cadets, tactical unit and crime officers will be the first batch to get the new service firearm, according to sources.
The current service revolvers, manufactured by American firearms maker Smith & Wesson, were already in use before Hong Kong’s handover.
According to a local media report, the police force will gradually replace the standard-issue revolvers with pistols made in China, increasing the magazine size from six to 15 with a faster reload.
Sources have stated that officers will need to pass a new pistol shooting test, and it is expected to take more than ten years for the new handgun to fully replace the revolvers within the force.
Crime officers are currently using semi-automatic pistols instead of standard-issue revolvers, and sources say the new handgun will also gradually replace the ones they use.
Cadets, tactical unit, emergency unit, and crime officers will be the first group to receive training for using the new pistol, which will begin later this month.
